The Best Value Vin de France 2014 panel

Best Value Selection 01On Thursday over 20 wine buyers from all corners of the world – Belgium, Japan, Canada, US, Czech Republic, China, Germany, Netherlands, Poland and UK – gathered to join forces with members of the Union des Oenologues de France to blind taste their way through 290 VIN DE FRANCE wines and select the top 30% of wines as our future ambassadors for 2014.

After several interesting hours, the tasting was complete, and the 87 medals awarded – 13 gold, and 74 silver [see list here]. Congratulations to the 59 brands and 37 companies amongst this fantastic selection of VIN DE FRANCE wines.

The tasting this year showed that whilst the stalwart big players continue to consistently be awarded, there are some Best Value Selection 02new players arriving on the scene – encouraging for us as it shows the continued dynamism amongst our growers and producers in France for the category.

I was delighted to hear the judges commenting on the consistently good quality of the wines presented – indeed it proved a hard job to whittle the award winning wines down to the legally permitted 30% (we could have had many more in the mix such was the quality!).

Proof, if proof were needed, that VIN DE FRANCE wines can withstand a difficult vintage, thanks in part to the ability to blend the best grapes and wines across French regions.

Classic varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon proved popular as always, but this year saw a rise in Merlot _MG_7806Anivin-retaillée BDamongst the winners, and Malbec entered the arena.

All 87 wines will now form part of a touring group of ambassador wines for VIN DE FRANCE wines throughout our activities for 2014. They make their début at Prowein, so if you are in Dusseldorf, please drop by at our stand C 01 Hall 5 to taste them all!
